I don't understand the high reviews. By the end of the first chapter I was wishing that an editor or critic partner would have explained to the author about point of view. Jumping from head to head sometimes in the same paragraph was disconcerting. If that had been the worst of it I probably would not be writing this review.... I purchased this free book based on the many glowing reviews it recieved. Sadly I missed the one star review about the discritive rape /sodomy with a foreign object of the heroine by her step brother. The level of description in this scene was not necessary to the plot. However there was enough description to convict stepbrother of multiple crimes. YUCK!!!!! My advice skip this book.Product details

Mask of Duplicity The Jacobite Chronicles Book 1 edition by Julia Brannan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I bought this because it was described As a light hearted read. But in fact (spoiler) the brother rapes the sister not that far into it. The author describes it in excruciating detail. It makes me want to throw up so I want to warn others.
It’s especially bad because you’re unprepared, expecting more of a rom com style, it’s really awful.
This book is not complete, only part one of the story. Author intends one to buy the next or maybe even a third to see the outcome. Very deceptive. About halfway through, I almost went to the end to check out the ending, & I could have seen that there was none. I won't be buying anything from this author and I will avoid any thing else she/he writes.
I was so very excited about this book! I loved the cover and read the fabulous reviews.... Then I got about 20% through and there in starts a my issues with this book and was surprised no on else commented on this.
Spoiler Alert!!!!!
The heroines half brother attempts to rape her! It was also described pretty graphically. I couldn't stomach it once I saw the road this was taking so I don't know what happened in the end and deleted it from my kindle.
I normally don't leave reviews but I felt that others may be disturbed by this like me and would want to know before picking up the book.
Horribly graphic rape scene I wish I had never read. We can know that a sexual assault has taken place without that kind of description. The book would be just fine with less detail in that scene and I hope the author gives it a good edit. Until then, no recommendations and a definite warning away from this book.
...But I can't. Other than head hopping, the story is excellent. Beth is feisty without sounding like a modern female plunked down in Georgian England, and Sir Anthony is a brilliant character. I laughed, I felt emotion for the characters, and enjoyed the history.
Here's the but Put a warning in the description about the domestic abuse situation, for Heaven's sake!!! There is a scene early in the story with attempted domestic rape and no warning. I even went back to to check the description and saw none (at the time of this reading). Which is really frustrating, because this is the level of writing which I would be willing to pay for the sequel.
This sordid subject (attempted incest) is not what I care to spend my time reading about, there are too many uplifting books on my reading list to get bogged down in a disturbing book like this. I was already frustrated with the book and wondered why I was reading it. Came back to look again at reviews - must have been missing the honest ones a few months ago. Quitting after 11% - no more free books for me.
Nothing irritates me more than finding out I have to buy a novel to get the end of the story. That being said I will seriously consider doing just so because I want the "heroine" to realize what a jerk she's been to the nice guy trying to help her.
